About Allison

Welcome to my blog. Thank you for visiting. If you want a little background on why I started this site (and an explanation for that little dragonfly in my title), check out my post “On Death, Dreams and Dragonflies“.

I’m Allison, a “real OC housewife”, not much like those you see on TV. Some of the differences: I cook at home and compost my food waste, my handbag is made from recycled inner tubes, and I care more about my gas mileage than the status of the car I drive.

I am the mom to two kids and two pound puppies, married to a traveling-salesman husband. Our family feels fortunate to live in a beautiful area of Orange County, where nature surrounds us. From mountain biking to awesome hiking trails, it’s all right out our front door.

You can find me around the OC – running, hiking, shopping at Trader Joe’s, or shuttling kids around to endless activities in my Prius. I tweet about all the green things I stumble across daily @ocgreenmama.

My approach to green is that it has to be practical, and baby steps are better than no steps at all. I know that busy moms don’t always have time to serve up completely homemade organic meals with locally grown produce or be prepared for every soccer practice with a reusable water bottle and sliced organic oranges.

I try to live green every day but I am far from perfect – downfalls include a love for wine (that isn’t necessarily organic) and an obsession with Costco. I try to make up for these transgressions by composting in my backyard and picking up other people’s trash.

I wrote a blog for many years as the “Real Green Mom” for OC Family and was a contributor to The Green Girls.

I’m thrilled that I get to see my name in print from time to time, as a freelance writer and contributor to OC Register Metro and OC Register Family. I am always looking for green topics in Orange County. Contact me if you have a good story.
